Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a twentieth-century German theologian with a gift for explicating the practical implications of Christian discipleship. As Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Bonhoeffer confronted the anti-Semitism of the church in Germany. Speaking against the Nazi ideology within the church was a decision that would eventually cost him his life. Bonhoeffer headed an underground seminary in Germany beginning in 1935, where he lived in close proximity with other dissenting believers.

It was during this experience that he wrote about the life of Christian community in his book Life Together. In 1945, at the age of 39, he was hanged for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler. Because he lived out his theological insights through standing against evil in his own time, Bonhoeffer’s writings continue to resonate the world over, showing what it means to follow Christ at all costs.

Read the attached chapter on "Community" in Life Together. Bonhoeffer offers insight on Christian relationships.
