Week 7 Homework (due EOD Monday, March 6, 2023)

Hi everyone, here is the homework for this week. For the remainder of the term, I will just make the deadline for our homework assignments a week after the class (so not Thursday, but the following Monday). This means the deadline for this assignment is EOD Monday, March 6. This gives you the weekend to work on it. 

This week's homework is a simple (but not-so-easy) exercise to help you improve your writing. 

The assignment is attached as a Word file. Please download the file, complete the exercise, and send it back to me as a Word file. If you have any questions, please email me ([email protected]). 

Here are some tips about good writing, building on what we discussed in class. 

Good writing: 

Uses short sentences. One sentence. Period. One thought. Especially at the beginner level. 

Eliminates wordiness. If you can say something in 10 words instead of 20 or 30, do it! Your writing will be stronger as a result. 

Is not redundant, full of jargon or abbreviations (e.g., you might know what KSA is, but anybody outside of Kwantlen will not know it stands for Kwantlen Student Association) 

Gets to the point quickly, and is focused. Hit me with the most important information right off the top. 

Has good thought flow. Sentence B flows from Sentence A. This takes lots of practice. To improve your thought flow, read your work out loud, or have a friend review it. It’s rare to get the thought flow right in one take! 

Uses paragraphs to separate ideas. Nobody wants to read one huge block of text!
