Organizational Development: Some company representatives believe inorder to achieve change in an organization, there must be an entireorganizational effort. Organizational development is the plannedand systematic process in changing an organization (usually to amore behavioral environment). Some OD interventions commonly usedare survey feedback, quality circles, employee involvement, andteam building, for example. 1.Discuss your knowledge/experienceswith organization-wide change attempts and whether or not they wereeffective. 2.If effective, what made them so? If not effective,what was missing? B.Performance Management: Performance managementand/or appraisal experiences for employees and supervisors are sovastly different. For some it is a chance to have a one-on-onediscussion about the employee’s work; to highlight strengths andidentify areas needing improvement; to identify barriers; todetermine how to contribute to the needs and goals of thedepartment/organization; to seek specific input, support, andguidance to achieve job and/or career goals. For others it resultsin a lack of understanding; assumption that the review will benegative; fear of surprises; concern for changes in therelationship between employee and supervisor; fear of failure; thatit becomes part of their file. Some supervisors are uncomfortabletalking about performance. They worry that the differences will beconfrontational; that the process is too time-consuming; possess afear of surprises; and are concerned about possible negativeconsequences in their relationship with the employee. 1.What is itabout the process and the relationship between the employee andsupervisor that makes the experiences so different? 2.Is itpossible for appraisals to become a less dreaded part ofsupervising others? If so, how? What needs to be done so thatperformance appraisals have constructive, positive outcomes forboth employees and supervisors?
