Sexual Harrassment of a Female Police Officer

In an actual case involving the Long Beach, California, Police Department, a female police officer was treated so badly that she sued the City of Long Beach and was awarded over $1 million dollars for sexual harassment (even though she was awarded this money, she has no yet received any of it because the City of Long Beach is appealing the jury's decision). The woman was having an affair with a higher-ranking male police officer (a sergeant) after he told her he was divorcing his wife. When she found out he was lying about his divorce and many other things, she broke off the affair and embarrassed him every time he later made advances. Not only did he use his rank to see that she was treated badly by the whole department, but when she called for backup on a call involving a violent suspect, none of the officers available (and there were several) responded to her call because they sided with him rather than her, thus placing her life at risk. Several times he made it quite clear that he wanted to continue the affair, and when she refused, he told her that her job and life would be made miserable because she wouldn't cooperate. Ultimately, she has required psychotherapy and a psychological leave because of the harassment she received. The female officer eventually lost her career, while none of the other police officers involved have been reprimanded or punished in any way.

·         Describe your feelings and thoughts about what exactly happened to this woman, who, by the way, evidently was an exemplary police officer before the harassment. How serious do you think this harassment was?

·         Do you think she "asked for" what she got by having an affair with a married police officer?

·         What do you think should be done to resolve this case? What should happen to the other police officers and anyone else found guilty of such harassment?
