Week 1 Discussion

Week 1: Introductions

Please note: The following applies to all discussions of this course.

Each week, you are to compose discussion in written form and to provide a narrated slide presentation. Here is a good practice to follow:

  1. Meet with your peers and brainstorm the assignment together. Freely exchange ideas in your group to help each other achieve the best outcomes.
  2. On your own, create a short document that responds to the discussion questions (and provides the basis for your brief presentation)
  3. Organize your ideas into bullet points on your slides
  4. Use visual images to support your text
  5. Gracefully narrate your ideas in a 1-2 minute narrated slide presentation.
  6. Respond to your classmates' presentations and in writing, audio, or video.
  7. You may use VoiceThread, the narration feature that comes with PowerPoint, or any compliant technology with which you may have familiarity.

Introductions and Getting Started

Please introduce yourself to the class in a way that makes you interesting to know. Create links between who you are and your specific experiences with technical communication. Based on your experience, peer discussion, and your reading of Chapter's 1 and 5 in your textbook, provide a clear definition for effective technical communication. How do letters, memos, and emails compare with or differ from each other? How does the rhetorical situation (subject, readers, purpose, and context of use), as well as format, style, and organization impact communication?

Enter the discussion 3 times on 3 separate days with the first post occurring prior to Wednesday midnight (and preferably earlier). At least one contribution is to be a 1-2 minute narrated slide presentation. Other posts may be written or oral.
