Developing Your INFORMATIVE Speech

Don't just start writing your speech without following this process:

1.      Read the Informative Speech Guidelines

2.      Read the Rubric (print a copy and use the "Category" Section as a checklist): Click Here for Rubric (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

3.      Read "Patterns of Organization" Handout: Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

When you are done looking over these resources, then start working on your speech!

1.      Pick your topic (you should have already posted your topic in the Post your informative speech topic DQ)

2.      Decide on your organization pattern - YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE!

3.      Pick your main points

4.      Do your research.  DO NOT START YOUR RESEARCH UNTIL YOU PICK YOUR THREE MAIN POINTS.

1.      Doing a general search will suck the life out of you. You will need to find one credible source for each main point for a total of three different sources

5.      Develop your three main points.  DO NOT WRITE YOUR INTRODUCTION OR CONCLUSION!

1.      You don't know what your are introducing because you are not done developing your main points.

2.      You can't write a conclusion if you don't know what your introduction is!

6.      Share your Three Main Points ONLY (in detail) with your classmates by posting it within this DQ posting (don't just list bullet points - make sure it is enough so we know what direction you are headed!) Make sure you are giving enough information for your classmates to have a clear understanding of what you plan on saying for the body of your speech.

7.      Read over four classmates' postings and give them feedback.  Make sure you take an "instructors" approach (be kind and honest! Your classmates' need your help as you are part of the audience!)
