The Ethics of Duty

Using academic scholarly research tools, find a current event article that addresses an ethical dilemma from the past three years and annotate it thoroughly. 

·          

o    What are the key points to the article?  Summarize the dilemma. 

o    What are the key terms of the article? 

o    What conflicts or controversies does it raise? 

o    Where can you offer analysis or an original point of view? 

Once you have a handle on the article and your reaction to the issues it raises, use it as a foundation to:

1.    Summarize your selected current event and ethical dilemma in 2-4 paragraphs (opening of your topic). 

2.    Apply Kant's Categorical Imperative of Duty to the problem you highlight. The Categorical Imperative of Duty:

First Formulation: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.
To put it more simply: Don't make yourself an exception to a rule that you implicitly or explicitly expect others to follow.

Second Formulation: Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means.
Another way to say this: Treat every person as a person, never as a tool for a job. 

3.    Apply any other method you have encountered in lecture material and the readings to help develop your analysis (body of contents of essay).

4.    Conclude with a recommendation for a resolution (conclusion). 

Create a document in APA format discussing all three ethical dilemmas in depth, including explanation of your findings and reasoning. Cite your scholarly sources in APA Reference Format.
