Week 4 Discussion

Unit 5: Discussion 1

The discussion points for this week examine the fertility control methods available and the wide range of effects of STDs.  The study of the STDs certainly illustrates the need for caution and information by all concerned parties. There are three discussion topics.

You are required to post your initial answers your comments on the postings of your classmates are due on Sunday at midnight.  Please be sure that your comments to peers are substantive; do not simply write "I disagree"; if you disagree, go on to explain your comment and add your own insights. All initial and follow-up responses require research and appropriate citations. You should have a minimum of two postings (one initial and one/more follow-up response/s) for each thread.

The following rubric will be used to score your discussion postings:

0-3 points

Only minimal response given with no elaboration OR failed to complete follow-up postings

4-7 points

Basic response and follow-up posting; all were clear and relevant, but needed more detail.

8-10 points

All responses were elaborated, clear, and detailed; complete responses and follow-up postings.

Discussion Topic

The best way for you to decide which type of fertility control is to look at the different methods available. There are several newer methods of fertility control either currently in use or near completion of testing. These include: Implanon, Mirena, Yasmin, Seasonale, Lybrel, NuvaRing, Ortho Evra, Plan B, the Today Sponge, Yaz, a vaccination and a male pill.

1.      Select two of these methods (from the list above) of fertility control and compare and contrast these two methods. This should include active ingredients, mode of action, effectiveness and side effects.

2.      Describe the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Try to take a different pairing from anyone who has posted. Use information from your textbook and other sources. Remember to correctly cite any source you use and if you use direct quotes, use them sparingly and include quotation marks!
