Unit 8: Discussion 1

The two topics that you are dealing with are two highly emotionally charged subjects.  Obviously it is impossible to cover these topics sufficiently in just one unit.  Hopefully the readings, questions, and homework will provide you with a basis of knowledge upon which you can expand.

You are required to post your initial answers morning; your comments on the postings of your classmates are due on Sunday at midnight.  Please be sure that your comments to peers are substantive; do not simply write "I disagree"; if you disagree, go on to explain your comment and add your own insights. All initial and follow-up responses require research and appropriate citations. You should have a minimum of two postings (one initial and one/more follow-up response/s) for each thread.

The following rubric will be used to score your discussion postings:

0-3 points

Only minimal response given with no elaboration OR failed to complete follow-up postings

4-7 points

Basic response and follow-up posting; all were clear and relevant, but needed more detail.

8-10 points

All responses were elaborated, clear, and detailed; complete responses and follow-up postings.

Discussion Topic

Older people die for a number of reasons: cancer, heart failure, complications due to diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer's, etc. Often times, the way we live our lives affect not only how long we live but what we die from. Go to following website and complete the short survey: The Longevity Game (http://www.nmfn.com/tn/learnctr--lifeevents-- longevity (Links to an external site.)). You should also remember what the average life span is as well as don't rely too much on the game when it says you are living a healthy life.

o    What were your results? Don't be surprised if you get 5 stars, I am more interested in your years.

o    Based on your readings this unit what factors do you think influenced the calculation of your life span and why?

o    What changes can you make to improve your life span?

·         Choose two common illnesses that older people die from and using your book or another source, explain how your lifestyle currently affects your risk of dying from these two diseases. Be specific!
