Understanding Load, Stress, and Structural Elements of Construction

For this assignment, assume you have been designated by your fire chief to offer a presentation to a class of new firefighter recruits. Your assigned topic is Load, Stress, and Structural Elements of Construction. This portion of their training will be administered remotely, so you have been asked to create a PowerPoint presentation with audio narration for each slide.

The presentation you create should be focused on a real-world example of a single building or structure. It is suggested that you consider using your home, your fire station, or another structure with which you are extremely familiar. You cannot base the presentation on a training structure or a previously burned structure.

The title of your presentation will be “Understanding Load, Stress, and Structural Elements of Construction.” Your presentation must include the components listed below.

§  Include at least one slide explaining why firefighters should evaluate load, stress, and structural elements during prefire planning.

§  Include three slides, each with a distinct picture, depicting various loads or stressors placed upon your selected building or structure. You must have at least one load and one stressor. Provide a detailed explanation on why the loads or stressors depicted in the images present a concern for firefighters.

§  Include three slides, each with a distinct structural component, from your selected building or structure. 

o    One of the images must be for a carried load, and one must be for a transferred load. The third may be a structural element of your choosing.

o    Describe the specific function in this building or structure of each structural element presented and how they either carry or transfer a load.

o    Identify the implications each presented structural element may have on firefighting efforts or firefighter safety.

                        Include at least one summary slide that recaps why it is crucial for firefighters to be aware of loads, stressors, and structural elements in a building or structure.

Each of the slides listed above must have at least 1 minute of recorded audio narration per slide. You can review the  tutorial Adding Audio to a PowerPoint if you need assistance with this PowerPoint feature. 

Your presentation must be a minimum of eight slides, not counting the title and reference slides. You must use at least two academic or industry-reliable sources to support your presentation. All sources used must have proper APA Style citations and references.
