CRIM 1100 Week 7 Discussion 1 | Kwantlen Polytechnic University
1. (a) General deterrence models are based on the belief that
individuals will not commit crimes if they fear punishment that is severe,
swift, and certain. Identify and discuss which of these three factors has, in
your view, been given the least attention and importance in the current
Canadian criminal justice system. Explain.
(b) Similarly, which factor appears to
be seen as the most important in our law and by policy-makers and, therefore,
is the most evident in our criminal justice system? Explain.
2. What would you recommend as an
appropriate punishment that would apply the principles of specific and general
deterrence if a 25-year-old man was arrested after he had broken into your
family home, ransacked the place, stole sentimental jewellery, and took all the
electronic devices, computers, and television.
