1. (a) General deterrence models are based on the belief that individuals will not commit crimes if they fear punishment that is severe, swift, and certain. Identify and discuss which of these three factors has, in your view, been given the least attention and importance in the current Canadian criminal justice system. Explain.

(b) Similarly, which factor appears to be seen as the most important in our law and by policy-makers and, therefore, is the most evident in our criminal justice system? Explain.

What would you recommend as an appropriate punishment that would apply the principles of specific and general deterrence if a 25-year-old man was arrested after he had broken into your family home, ransacked the place, stole sentimental jewellery, and took all the electronic devices, computers, and television.
