This week we have discussed how the mind
organizes knowledge. I am sure that we have all heard stories of people who have
fascinating recall abilities, such as Kim Peek, the man that the movie Rainman was
based off of. For our group activity this week please search the web for
examples of cognitive savants that you find interesting to share with your
group. As a group, using what we know about the normal mind, let's try to
explain why and how these skills develop. One question you want to discuss is,
in the case of these knowledge savants, is there any functioning that appears
to be deficient? Another way to put it would be, does there appear to be a
trade off for the improved memory or knowledge representation skills? Is there
a theme to this trade-off, and what might this theme tell us?
