ENGL 102 Week 1 Discussion 1 | Assignment Help | Southwestern College
Assignment 1.2: Discussion (Deliverable: Discussion post)
Description
In this assignment, you will choose a short passage to focus on and
complete a passage-based focused free write in a
discussion post. Then you will comment on posts from your classmates to ask
questions and make observations about their free writes.
Instructions
1. Review the steps to a passage-based focused freewrite in Chapter 2, Section 2.3.
2. In a post to the discussion board, copy out a short passage (as
short as one sentence or as one paragraph) from one of the essays you read in
Assignment 1.1. Choose a passage that is central to the essay or one that you
find puzzling or may not fully understand.
3. After typing the excerpt from the passage verbatim, write about
it without stopping for 5 to 10 minutes. In your post, try to do all of the
following:
·
Contextualize the passage
·
Focus on what the passage is inviting readers to think
·
Make observations about the passage
·
Address how the passage is representative and how it connects to broader
issues in the reading.
4. After you have completed your freewrite, be sure to
read others’ posts and respond to at least two posts by adding clarification,
asking questions, or adding constructively to the discussion. To guide your
responses, consider the following questions:
·
Do you agree or disagree with your classmates’ statements? Why?
·
How does personal experience shape your comments, and how might your
classmates' experiences shape their comments?
Participation Requirements:
Consult the grading rubric in the Faculty & Course Info section for
the grading criteria.
Original discussion board posts:
·
Create a thread for your original post identified with your name.
·
An average of 350-500 words in length with proper punctuation,
capitalization, and grammar
·
Include supportive evidence, such as direct applicable experience and
expert sources
