ENGL 102 Week 2 Discussion | Assignment Help | Southwestern College
Assignment 2.3: Discussion — Reading Critically
(Deliverable: Discussion post)
Description
In this assignment, you will choose a short passage from one of the
essays you selected in Assignment 2.2 and complete a passage-based focused
freewrite on that passage in a discussion post. Then you will comment on posts
from your classmates to ask questions and make observations about their
freewrites.
Instructions
1.
Review the steps to a passage-based focused freewrite in Chapter 2,
Section 2.3.
2. In a post to the discussion board, copy out a short passage (up
to one paragraph) from one of the essays you read in Assignment 2.2. Choose a
passage that is central to the essay or one that you find puzzling or may not
fully understand.
3. After typing the excerpt from the passage verbatim,
write about it without stopping for five to 10 minutes. In your post, try to do
all of the following:
·
Contextualize the passage.
·
Focus on what the passage is inviting readers to think.
·
Make observations about the passage.
·
Address how the passage is representative and how it connects to broader
issues in the reading.
4. After you have completed your freewrite, be sure to
read others’ posts and respond to at least two posts by adding clarification,
asking questions, or adding constructively to the discussion. To guide your
responses, consider the following questions:
·
Do you agree or disagree with your classmates’ statements about their
analysis of the posted passages? Why?
·
How does personal experience shape your comments, and how might your
classmates' experiences shape their comments?
Writing Requirements
·
Your initial post should be around 250 words (not including the
copied passage), and responses should each be about 100 words, but don’t
hesitate to write more if your descriptions and assessments of your classmate’s
analysis would benefit from additional detail.
·
Please be sure to treat the discussion forums with the same academic
approach as you would a written assignment. This applies to your initial
response as well as peer responses and follow-up.
·
Proofread your post to eliminate mechanical and grammatical errors.
Participation Requirements:
Consult the Undergraduate Reflective Discussion Grading Rubric in the
Faculty & Course Info section for the grading criteria.
Original discussion board posts:
·
Create a thread for your original post identified with your name.
·
Around 250 words in length (not counting the verbatim excerpt) with
proper punctuation, capitalization, and grammar
