Unit 2: Discussion 1

Most of our discussion this unit will be about food choices and the results of these choices. There are two discussion threads. Remember to enter your input by and then respond to a classmates by Sunday evening. Please be sure that your comments to peers are substantive; do not simply write "I disagree"; if you disagree, go on to explain your comment and add your own insights.  All initial and follow-up responses require research and appropriate citations. You should have a minimum of two postings (one initial and one/more follow-up response/s) for each thread.

The following rubric will be used to score your discussion postings:

1-3 points

Only minimal response given with no elaboration OR failed to complete follow-up postings

4-7 points

Basic response and follow-up posting; all were clear and relevant, but needed more detail.

8-10 points

All responses were elaborated, clear, and detailed; complete responses and follow-up postings.

Discussion Topic

After dinner sit awhile, after supper walk a mile. ----English proverb

Each day approximately 20% of the U.S. population eats at a fast-food restaurant.  The reasons for patronizing these are convenience, perceived lack of time to shop and prepare meals at home, fast food’s taste and texture, the need to satisfy children, and cost.  Since fast food is so popular and prevalent, it is healthful to know the nutrient content of the fast food we consume.  The earlier in the unit that you enter your input means that you have more choices.  Select something that no one else has.  So……..

·         Go to your favorite fast-food restaurant and ask for a copy of the brochure listing the nutritional content of that food.  (If you do not eat at these places, do the assignment for someone you know who does and share the information with her or him.)

·         Choose a fast-food meal that is typical for you.  Using the brochure determine the following information:
a.      Total calories
b.      Grams of protein
c.      Total grams of fat
d.      Total grams of saturated fats
e.      mg of cholesterol
f.       mg of sodium
g.      Grams of fiber

·         List the reasons you eat at the restaurant.

·         How often do you eat fast-food?
