IT governance framework

Discussion - IT governance framework

Weekly tasks or assignments (Individual or Group Projects) will be due by Monday and late submissions will be assigned a late penalty in accordance with the late penalty policy found in the syllabus. NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.

Case Study: Problem 1

U.S. Sports Fanatics has several problems in accessing sales data effectively and in a timely fashion because of its very basic paper-based process, causing it to lose out to its competition. An information technology (IT) infrastructure evaluation has to be conducted and analyzed to evaluate the company's nature of business and need for IT architecture, specifically for Sports Fanatics. Without fact-finding and statistics, the IT infrastructure will not help.

Key Assignment Overview

IT Governance Structure and Framework

Throughout this course, you will work on several aspects of IT governance that will result in a complete IT Governance Policies and Procedures Manual for a company of your choosing. IT governance formalizes the policies and processes that enforce IT systems and information security, data management, data policies, business process management, and risk management. You will not actually be performing the implementation of the plan, but you will work extensively with the concepts of good IT governance practices. The scenario company will be an example to the assignments. This course is comprised of a series of Individual Project assignments that will contribute to a Key Assignment submission at the end of the course. Each week, you will complete a part of an IT Governance Policies and Procedures Manual based on your selected organization. Appropriate research should be conducted to support the development of your document, and assumptions may be made when necessary. Additional information and the deliverables for each Individual Project will be provided in the assignment description for the week. This is the course Key Assignment to which you will make contributions each week.

Organization and Project Selection

The first step will be to select an organization as the target for your IT governance plan. This organization can be real or hypothetical and will be used as the basis for each of the assignments throughout the course and should conform to the following guidelines:

Nontrivial: The selected organization should be large and should contain sensitive data requiring the implementation of security measures.
Domain knowledge: You should be familiar enough with the organization and typical security needs without significant time required for security research and education.
Accessibility: You should have good access to security officers and management or incident response personnel in the organization, because these resources will provide direction as they progress throughout the development of the report.
Note: The selected organization may already have an IT governance plan in place and still be used as the basis for the projects in this course
Select an organization that meets these requirements, and submit your proposal to your instructor before proceeding further with the assignments in the course. Approval should be sought within the first several days of the course. Your instructor will tell you how to submit this proposal and what notification will be given for project approval.

Assignment

For the assignments in this course, you will not be performing the IT governance plan implementation; but rather, you will be developing a comprehensive IT Governance Policies and Procedures Manual. Your first task in this process will be to select an organization to use as the basis of your projects. You will also create the shell document for the final project deliverable that you will be working on during each unit. As you proceed through each project phase, you will add content to each section of the final document to gradually complete the final project delivery. Appropriate research should be conducted to support the analysis in your plan, and assumptions may be made when necessary.

The overall IT Governance Policies and Procedures Manual will consist of the following deliverables:

Week 1: Project Outline
Week 1: Governance Framework
Week 2: Business and IT Goals and Mission Statement
Week 3: IT Support Policies
Week 4: Disaster Recover and Business Continuity Policies
Week 5: Training Plan and Continuous Improvement Plan
The following is the project outline for the complete deliverable due in Week 5:
