SCI 100 WEEK 1 DISCUSSION 1 SNHU
1-1 Discussion: Asking Scientific Questions
In your first post, introduce yourself to your
instructor and peers. Share who you are, where you’re from, and
what your goals are for taking this course.
Then, search Science Daily for
a news story about a natural science topic that’s less than six months old.
Make sure to choose a story that interests you, because you’ll use this news
story for all the projects in this course.
Once you’ve chosen a news story, summarize the main ideas from
the article. Then, draft two questions that a natural scientist might ask about
the topic. Include both the summary and the two questions in your initial post.
As you write your questions, think about what you’ve learned about the natural
sciences and scientific thinking in the module overview. For instance, if you
chose an article on volcanic eruptions, you might ask: what causes eruptions to
happen and how do we predict when they’ll occur? Make sure to include the news
story title and a link to it in your post.
After that, reply to two of your peers’
initial posts. When responding, discuss how their questions relate to the
natural sciences. Share how you could clarify your post based on what you
learned from reading theirs. When replying to your peers, your tone and
language should be respectful, and your feedback should be constructive. This
means that your comments should focus on the positive parts of their post and
how the ideas might be strengthened.
