Module 3 Discussions - Reading as a Doubter

'Reading against the grain' means reading with a skeptical eye. You 'resist' the author by questioning assumptions, statements, evidence, credentials, and/or logic. This is the way we 'read' advertisements and public relations materials such as political campaign news releases, where we have a reason to suspect bias. Reading against the grain is reading as a doubter. This exercise lets you practice reading against the grain.

1.    Read Chapter 5, pages 92-98 (Ramage, et al.). Then read the short excerpt by Annie Dillard in the 'Practicing Strong Response Reading Strategies' box on page 109.

2.    In 3-5 sentences, write your immediate reaction to her statement. Choose an image in her excerpt that you reacted particularly strongly to. Describe the image and your reaction; post your description.

3.    Return to the discussion later in the week and read some of your classmates' responses. Did others choose the same image you did? Did they react in the same way, or were their reactions different from yours?
