Week 6 - What Would You Do?

  • For each of the following scenarios, pick the response that comes closest to what you would do in a similar situation. Please provide at least 1 sentence in further explanation of your possible behavior. Submit your writing in a Word document.

A)    You’re late for an appointment because you've been circling the block for the past twenty minutes looking for a parking spot. Then you spot one. You put your signal light on and position yourself two cars ahead to allow the person who is maneuvering out enough room. Then, as soon as she pulls out, and you get ready to back in, another car comes from down the street and pulls right into the spot. You tell the driver that you were there first, but he laughs at you and proceeds to walk out of his car. What do you do?

  • Nothing; look for another spot.
  • Mutter some choice words under your breath and proceed to look for another spot.
  • Curse the driver out loud.
  • Wait till the driver leaves and do some damage to the car.
  • Punch the driver.

Choose one or more options from above. Explain using more detail. Is your response a representation of the Evolutionary Theory of Aggression or the Social Learning Theory? Why? Would your response differ if you were around a family member? Explain.

B)    You’re standing in a long line for two hours waiting for the box office to open so you could get concert tickets for your favorite rock group. The group’s tour was supposed to have been sold out, but yesterday they announced that one additional performance was scheduled. You hope you’ll be able to get two tickets. Out of nowhere, comes an individual who pushes his way into the line right in front of you and says, “I was here earlier. I had to go and now I’m back.” You tell the person to get on the end of the line but the person refuses. What do you do?

  • You do nothing.
  • Soundlessly mutter a few choice words about the person.
  • Call the person a liar and other things out loud.
  • ‘Accidentally’ shove into the person a few times.
  • Hit the person until the person leaves the spot.

C)    You’re sitting in the cafeteria, having lunch. Your stuff is on the table in front of you. You have a couple of books and a social psychology paper that you've worked on diligently for the past two weeks. Today’s the due date, but that’s okay, because you’re prepared to hand it in right after lunch. Two people whom you don’t know begin to argue. In the midst of verbal accusations, one picks up a full paper cup and hurls it in the direction of the other person. That person ducks and orange soda spills all over your social psychology paper and ruins it. What do you do?

  • You leave the cafeteria to locate your professor and explain what happened.
  • You silently curse the two persons who were fighting while you dry your books.
  • You scream obscenities at the person who threw the cup.
  • You pick up your drink and hurl it at the person who threw the cup.
  • You hit the person who threw the cup.

D)    You and your date (someone you’re in a serious relationship with) are at a party. Your date mingles with others for a while, then comes over, accuses you of cheating, and slaps your face. What do you do?

  • Calmly deny it.
  • Say, “We’re through. I never want to see you again.”
  • Use curse words.
  • Do nothing now but plan to ruin your date’s reputation later.
  • Return the slap.
