Week 2 Extended Definition Paper
All researchers must define the terms or concepts they plan to use
in their research question. For example, if your research question was, “How do
new hires into an organization become socialized into the organization?” you
would need to define what you meant by “become socialized.” Do you mean how are
new employees oriented to their jobs? Or do you mean how do new employees learn
the unwritten rules of the organization? Whatever you mean, you will have to
explain this concept and why it is important to your research question. To do
that, you will need to turn to the authorities, or seminal theorists, in the
field and see how they have defined these concepts. By combining your own
definition of the concept (using logic and reasoning) and the contributions of
experts, you will be able to define your concept quite specifically.

1-1.5 page paper defining a concept in your research question.

Many misunderstandings
and mistakes have been caused by inexact definitions of abstract concepts. You
need to be able to narrow down the topics and develop in-depth areas of
expertise that can be acquired through writing meaningful academic papers.

means you need to know when to ask questions and gain clarity on an unfamiliar
task. Perhaps one of the most valuable questions you can learn to ask more

o An extreme example from the “real world” is the
case of the 1977 Tenerife airport crash in the Canary Islands. This accident
resulted in 583 fatalities, and is still the deadliest aviation accident in
history. The accident involved two 747 Boeing aircraft who had been diverted
from the Gran Canaria airport after a bomb scare to the Tenerife airport. A
dense fog grounded both planes for a while, and when the fog lifted, both
aircraft were anxious to take off since both passengers and crew had been
onboard for many hours. The aircraft were both lined up on the only
runway at the airport. Due to miscommunications from the control tower, the KLM
flight attempted to take off while the Pan Am flight was still sitting on the
runway. At the time, there was no standard phraseology within the
aviation industry. Industry lessons learned from the Tenerife disaster had a
long lasting effect on the aviation industry, including the elimination of the
word “takeoff” from the language used by the control tower and the pilots, as
well as training in which even less experienced cabin crew members were taught
to question their captains. Similarly, experienced captains were required to
pay attention to the concerns of their crews and consider their crews’ concerns
in making decisions.

into clearly defined terms using examples and making an unfamiliar topic more
familiar.
