Intros and Conclusions Discussion Board

Introductions

Last week you began drafting your first speech.  We started with the body of the speech, but as you learned from chapter 9 of our textbook Links to an external site., introductions are also a SUPER important part of your speech; if you don't start off strong, it can be hard or even impossible to recover your audience.  Luckily, you learned there are certain components you include in your intro to make sure you're starting off on a good note.  I created this discussion board post to help guide you as you draft your introduction to speech 1.

Conclusions:

Chapter 11 Links to an external site.showed us that a strong conclusion is very important because it’s a speaker’s final chance to really explain the importance of her or his message and allows the speaker to both signal the end of the speech and help the audience to remember the main ideas. As such, speakers need to thoroughly examine how they will conclude their speeches with power.

Directions for your assignment:

Answer the following 7 questions about your speech's intro and conclusion. Please number your responses for this activity to make it easier to read and receive feedback.

1.    What is your general purpose? (choose one)

To inform

To persuade

To entertain

2.    What is your specific purpose?

3.    Which attention-getting device do you plan on using?

4.    How will you link your attention-getting device to your actual topic?

5.    What reasons are you going to give that your audience to listen to the speech? (In other words, how will you address the "so what?" of your rhetorical situation?)

6.    What is your thesis statement?

7.    Write out your preview of your three main body points.

8.     What concluding devise are you going to use in your conclusion?

**Normally in an introduction of a speech, you would qualify yourself with an Espousal of Credibility, letting us know you are well researched and qualified to speak on the topic; however, since this first speech is all about yourself, you don't need to do that.  Instead, you will show us you have credibility simply by being well practiced. prepared, and organized during your speech.
